What does "Upset" mean?
"Upset" means overturned — the way a table gets upset when someone flips it. In Matthew 21, Jesus walked into the temple and turned over the tables of people who had gotten comfortable inside an arrangement that should never have been there.
Some beliefs need that. Not because they are offensive, but because they were never examined. They were handed to us, repeated around us, and eventually assumed. Upset Theology is the work of turning those tables over — carefully, with the text open — and rebuilding on something that will hold.
Scripture has the authority. Tradition, popularity, and personal preference do not.
Context comes before application. What a passage meant to its first readers is the doorway to what it means for us.
Correction is a form of care. The point is never to embarrass anyone. The point is that people are building their lives on this.
Clarity over cleverness. If a teaching cannot be traced back to the text, it does not get taught here.
Disagreement is welcome. Dishonesty with the text is not.
Challenging assumptions. Confronting error. Returning to Scripture.
Pastor WJ Daggins is a Bible teacher, worship leader, author, and the host of Upset Theology.
He was ordained on June 12, 2022 through On This Rock International Church of God's Love, Inc., under Bishop Dr. L.J. Delevoe of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and serves as a licensed associate pastor at Jesus People Proclaim in Boca Raton under Dr. Billy and Cynthia Thompson, where he also leads worship. He began his formal theological training at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa and has been accepted to South Florida Bible College to continue it. He is the author of The Complicated Simplicity: Reclaiming Your Will.
He teaches Scripture in its biblical, historical, and cultural context, with particular attention to ideas that have been repeated so often that people assume they are biblical without ever checking.
He is a father, and he teaches out of a life that includes stumbles, corrections, and rebuilding — not from a distance. That is deliberate. He is not interested in being unreachable, and he is not interested in pretending the questions are easy.
Based in South Florida. Available for teaching, preaching, and speaking engagements nationally.
